Testing rules to enter Qld see interstate clinics swamped

The NSW government is urging other states to reconsider travel testing rules as COVID-19 swab turnaround times blow out, clinics are stretched and infections hit record highs.

The state government will also engage with their Queensland counterparts about whether rapid antigen tests could be used in lieu of PCR tests ahead of interstate travel, to lighten the load on testing clinics. Clinics across Sydney have been temporarily shut in recent days as kilometre-long queues cause havoc on roads and some face staff shortages. Test results are taking more than three days in some cases. On Tuesday, NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant encouraged people without symptoms to use rapid tests for “peace of mind” when attending social events and to maintain mask-wearing indoors.

Three private Histopath drive-through clinics in Sydney turned people away before 9am on Tuesday due to a shortage of available tests at Arncliffe, Mascot International Airport and Maroubra.
