Susan Ryan, the first woman to serve in a Labor federal cabinet and who later became the first Age Discrimination Commissioner, has died aged 77.

Tributes poured in for Ms Ryan on Sunday, attesting to her trailblazing role as a feminist and human rights campaigner and her political achievements as the ACT's first female Senator, a position she held for 12 years.Ms Ryan was the architect of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984, and played a key role in the passage of the Affirmative Action Act 1986, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Act 1987.

Elected to the Senate in 1975, Ms Ryan entered the Hawke cabinet in 1983 as the Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, and Minister assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women.Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek said Ms Ryan was "a hugely impressive role model and a mentor to Labor women".Labor leader Anthony Albanese said Ms Ryan had achieved "historic firsts" as the first female Labor Minister and the first female Minister for Women.

"But in a life dedicated to women’s rights and equality, Susan achieved something even bigger – that while she was the first, she would never be the last," Mr Albanese tweeted on Sunday. Former Labor leader Bill Shorten also paid tribute on Twitter, saying: "Vale Susan Ryan. Trailblazing Labor Senator, Cabinet Minister & anti-discrimination campaigner. A worthy candidate for a state funeral."
