Tropical Cyclone Zelia, a category one system, is tracking towards Western Australia's Pilbara coast and is expected to intensify to category three strength before crossing the coast on Friday. Communities south of Broome to Dampier and inland to Marble Bar are being warned to prepare for the storm.
The category one system is 280 kilometres west of Broome and 320 kilometres north-east of Port Hedland and is continuing to track slowly towards the east Pilbara coast.
The Bureau of Meteorology said sustained gale strength winds above 64 kilometres per hour and damaging gusts of up to 120 kph were likely today in coastal areas.“Over the course of a couple of days we’re expecting to see hundreds of millimetres of rainfall for that stretch of coastline,” he said.Department of Fire and Emergency Services Kimberley Superintendent Leon Gardiner said a major highway was expected to close as the cyclone approached the coast.
The Town of Port Hedland said kerbside collections would continue as normal during the advice level warning and that South Hedland Landfill was open and accepting waste.
