Tropical Cyclone Zelia is predicted to intensify into a category five storm, bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall to Western Australia. Residents are advised to prepare for potential flooding and power outages.
Western Australia n residents have been urged to prepare for Tropical Cyclone Zelia , which is predicted to intensify from a category three to a potential category five storm by Thursday. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued warnings that the cyclone, currently located north of Port Hedland, will rapidly strengthen as it moves slowly toward the coast.
Zelia is expected to bring destructive wind gusts to communities in the Pilbara region as early as Thursday night or Friday when it makes landfall. The BOM states there is high uncertainty regarding the precise location and timing of the cyclone's crossing, particularly where its very destructive inner core will impact. Heavy rainfall, which has already been observed across the region, will continue for several days, with accumulations of up to 500 millimeters forecast. This level of rainfall could lead to significant flooding. Sky News Australia meteorologist Marina Neuman describes Zelia as a major cyclone, predicting it will move inland through Western Australia, bringing heavy rain until Sunday. Destructive winds of up to 160km/h and intense rainfall are anticipated to affect coastal communities stretching from Whim Creek to Wallal Downs, including Port Hedland. The BOM cautions that destructive wind gusts may be delayed until Friday and occur between De Grey and Mardie, including Karratha, Dampier, and Port Hedland, if the cyclone remains offshore and moves further west. They also warn of very destructive winds along the Pilbara coast, potentially reaching gusts of up to 290km/h at the cyclone's center. Residents between Port Hedland and Bidyadanga are advised to be vigilant for potential dangerous storm tides as the cyclone crosses the coast. Fire authorities have announced the closure of the Great Northern Highway as the cyclone approaches to ensure motorist safety. Supermarkets and other retailers are taking steps to increase stock levels, ensuring stores have adequate supplies of essentials for residents.
