A war of words has erupted between U.S President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after the Canadian leader was caught gossiping about Trump’s behaviour. 9News

Footage of the palace reception was recorded by a pool camera. The clip was posted online by Canadian broadcaster CBC and has been viewed more than five million times.

Trudeau's office had no immediate comment. Trudeau spoke briefly to Trump as NATO leaders gathered for a summit today in Watford, outside London, and the two men shook hands. The UK prime minister, who is hosting the 70th anniversary gathering, said Britain's commitment remained "absolutely rock solid".

On arriving at the NATO meeting today Macron, asked whether he stood by his comment, told reporters: "Yes, absolutely. In fact it allowed us to raise some crucial debates." Johnson - who hosted talks with Macron, Erdogan and German chancellor Angela Merkel in Downing Street today in an attempt to resolve their differences - sought to play down the divisions.

Downing Street said the leaders had agreed on the need to ensure humanitarian access to refugees displaced by the fighting in northern Syria based on a United Nations "needs assessment".
