The eyes of the world were on Cathy Freeman at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She can still remember every step of her gold medal race
Cathy Freeman, in the ABC's cinematic documentary marking the 20th anniversary of her Sydney Olympics 400-metre sprint win, speaks about that historical moment as if she is right back there on the track in her Nike swift suit, the roar of "the beast" that was the largest-ever Olympic crowd threatening to "shatter through the glass and crash into my sacred space".
"People love her but I don't know if they listen to what she's got to say. They perhaps think of her as a great athlete but maybe not on another level. It was what surprised me the most when I first met her. She is incredibly wise. You do not get to where she is and you do not travel through fame the way she has without being very smart. Even in her first television interview, which we show in the film, she's so articulate, so evolved for 16 years old.
