Queensland police detectives Mark White and Grant Ralston are recognised with a Child Protection award for the success of a program that inspires at-risk young people to get off the streets and away from a life of crime.

Queensland police detectives Mark White and Grant Ralston have spent decades protecting children, arresting offenders and preparing cases to have them locked away. The trial began in Logan and was so successful it received funding to expand to five other locationsBut after seeing young people stuck in cycles of crime, the pair knew there had to be a better way.

"We actually hand-picked the people who we wanted to be involved in the program … people who know, or really understand what it's like to be a young person," Inspector White said. The Co-Responder Program aims to reduce the number of incidents like this 2019 arrest in Logan of a 14-year-old. Inspector White said the aim was to have a positive influence on young people before they got into trouble.
