The government needs to provide more security and certainty around its JobSeeker and JobKeeper programs, according to Shadow Assistant Treasurer StephenJonesMP.

The government needs to provide more security and certainty around its JobSeeker and JobKeeper programs, according to Shadow Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the government would “continue to provide the support necessary for businesses and families” but refused to reveal whether it would extend JobKeeper or JobSeeker in response to the coronavirus emergency in Victoria.

The welfare schemes are under review and the next phase of support will be announced on July 23. “It’s unrealistic for us to assume that the economy is going to snap-back to the way it was pre COVID-19 at the end of September,” Mr Jones told Sky News. “We are not kidding ourselves for one moment. “There are going to business which aren’t going to make it, there is going to be a kick up in unemployment. “It is simply not tenable for the government to withdraw its support by the end of September.

COVID-19 measures 'are always going to have a level of unfairness' | Sky News AustraliaCOVID-19 measures 'are always going to have a level of unfairness' | Sky News AustraliaNationals Senator Matt Canavan says the coronavirus cannot be extinguished so authorities should be concerned with making sure “we’re nimble enough to respond to issues as they arise”. \n\nThe border between NSW and Victoria is set to close from 11:59pm on Tuesday in a bid to prevent Melbourne’s surge in coronavirus cases spreading north, which is expected to cause problems for twin-city communities such as Albury-Wodonga. \n\nMr Canavan told Sky News while it was inconvenient for those impacted by the closures, he was in favour of border closures and travel restrictions in a targeted approach. \n\n“It would be worthwhile us looking at sharper rather than blunter measures in response to local outbreaks,” he said. \n\n“That means more targeted lockdowns, more targeted restrictions on travel where the actual outbreaks are occurring.\n\n“Some of these measures are always going to have a level of unfairness if you like, it’s unfair that people are locked up in towers, it’s unfair that some suburbs have had to be locked down, but if we can limit the unfairness to where the measures have to be targeted to, that will be better for more people and it will help our economy.” \n\nImage: AP
