Hundreds of people on Kingston Beach near Hobart work together to rescue a stranded pilot whale.

Volunteers who worked through Saturday night to save a stranded pilot whale near Hobart were continuing the battle on Sunday morning.

Members of the public and Parks and Wildlife Marine Conservation staff began helping the beached pilot whale at Kingston about 4:00pm Saturday. It then became stranded again at Opposum Bay, where residents have managed to guide it offshore. The Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment spokesman Warwick Brennan said it was not known what caused the mammal to beach itself.

"But the fact it is an animal that is normally found in pods, the fact that it is on its own and also up the River Derwent, it does appear that there could be something wrong with it. Pilot whales are common around Tasmania's coastline but Mr Brennan said it was unusual to see one so far up the River Derwent.
