"Magma rising or water getting into the magma chamber below the surface of the Earth can be an explosive combination and a failure of the edifice, or failure of the crust then allows water to get into a hotter part of the system which can lead to an eruption like the one we saw yesterday – so there may be very little warning and it may be quite energetic.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern did not answer questions as to why people were allowed on the island if scientists issued a warning about increased activity.
