Tributes have flowed for English cricket legend Ray Illingworth following his death at the age of 89.
Illingworth played 61 Test matches for England, taking 122 wickets at 31.20 and scored 1836 runs at an average of 23.24 including two centuries between 1958 and 1973.
“We are deeply saddened to learn that Ray Illingworth has passed away,” the county wrote on its Twitter account. “Illingworth’s greatest gift as captain lay in creating the illusion that he had 14 or 15 players on the field: so expertly did he block a batsman’s favourable scoring strokes,” said specialist website, Cricinfo.England Cricket Board chief executive officer Tom Harrison added: “It’s always incredibly sad to lose a person who has given so much to the English game, and to the sport of cricket in general.
