A 95-year-old veteran who had to catch several buses to get to an Auckland march against racism on Sunday says the mosque attacks in Christchurch have brought people together.
A smiling John Sato, who lives in the east Auckland suburb of Howick, was photographed during the march being supported by a police officer on one side and a helper on the other.
Sato, whose mother was Scottish and father Japanese, was one of only two Kiwi-Japanese recruited into the New Zealand army during World War 2,These days he spends most of his time walking around his neighbourhood, doing chores and listening to classical music and opera on the radio. His wife died 15 years ago and their only daughter, who was born blind and became talented in yoga, died last year."I stayed awake quite a lot of the night, and I didn't sleep too well ever since.
