A judge has begun the sentence hearing for the driver of the bus which rolled in the Hunter Valley, killing 10, as families and survivors arrive at court.
Families and surviving friends of 10 wedding guests, killed when a bus rolled over in the Hunter Valley wine region last year, walked arm-in-arm into Newcastle courthouse on Monday for the sentencing of the driver behind the “unprecedented” tragedy.
The 59-year-old has awaited sentencing in prison since May when he pleaded guilty to 10 counts of dangerous driving occasioning the deaths.Dozens of their family members walked into the Newcastle District Court, on Monday morning, as did Button’s family.“They deserved so much more time and their boys deserved to grow up with their parents by their side,” one family member told the court.Judge Roy Ellis, convening the hearing, said Button was facing a “lengthy sentence”.
One woman “felt scared and put her head in her partner’s lap ... who held her as a result”, the fact sheet claims.“He’s coming in hot,” another passenger told his wife as Button approached the roundabout.But as Button attempted to traverse the roundabout his bus rolled onto the side impacting “heavily” with the road, slid up the concrete surface and hit a long steel guard rail.
