Liberal MP David Southwick says Victorians “just want consistency” when it comes to COVID rules in the state.
While the Boxing Day Test at the MCG is scheduled to go ahead as planned there has been speculation there may be density limits imposed on the Australian Open in response to the Omicron varaint of COVID-19.
“One rule for running the Australian Open and a different one for the cricket – we just want consistency with all of this and we want some certainty and confidence,” Mr Southwick told Sky News host Caleb Bond. “The events industry’s been absolutely smashed and the last thing that we need … is for the rest of the world to be looking at us with the uncertainty of who can come, how we’re going to run it and if we’re going to run it.
“We should be using the Australian Open as a huge reset button to be able to say come and visit Melbourne, come and visit Victoria, but instead we’re having these mixed messages … and ongoing confusion.”
