Video-streaming drives 25 per cent surge in NBN downloads | fergushunter
The National Broadband Network is experiencing a major surge in data consumption by households and businesses, with total downloads on the network rising 25 per cent over the past year and the average customer's monthly use up to 258 gigabytes.
"The network is supporting an explosion in subscription video on demand services, with video-streaming making up the largest share of data downloads on the NBN," Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said."Importantly, the ability of the network to support applications with high data requirements also enables services including distance education and telemedicine."
Demand was highest on Wednesday and Sundays. School holidays in January and April also caused spikes in activity.
