The eruption on the Canary Island, La Palma, has captured the world's attention recently after causing thousands of residents to evacuate. But can a volcanic eruption have a positive impact? Scientists studying an active subantarctic volcano seem to think so.

Previously, scientists were not able to quantify the impact of the volcano's eruptions on ocean productivity.will allow them to account for volcanic emissions in their climate modelling.

"We kept sampling from Australia all the way to Heard Island and what we discovered was a massive increase in all the nutrients that the marine ecosystem needs as we were getting closer to the volcano," Dr Perron said. Usually an ocean's iron supply comes from a nearby landmass, for example, through agricultural run-off.

"This study is really important regionally because there are many different volcanoes in the Southern Ocean and each of them has the potential to create or stimulate marine life in its own local area."Volcanic eruptions are not the only source of iron for our oceans.
