Simon Beard says being an entrepreneur is like trying to make it to the NBA. His days are literally planned to the minute. Hear his story on the How I Made It podcast. Listen for free.
Simon Beard and his wife, Tah-nee, turned a humble market stall into global streetwear retail chain Culture Kings. They sold their company to a.k.a Brands last year in a deal valuing Culture Kings at more than $600 million. Here’s what he learnt along the way.“I’m a huge one on discipline. To really sort of be an entrepreneur, you’ve got to be so disciplined in your time and your energy and what you do. This is something that I’m still so adamant about today.
Had the Beards sold Culture Kings in an all-equity deal, rather than taking just over half in cash, they’d have lost about 80 per cent of their wealth after a.k.a Brands shares sank this year. “He was this big one of how [the deal] was structured. It can be such an emotional sort of experience. And I’m such that entrepreneur, I just want to bet the farm every time you know.
“Everyone uses it. And they think putting some stupid little game console in the corner, ‘oh it’s an experience’. I like to think of it, it’s like a theatre, and it’s a show. Like, that’s what retail should be. We’re putting on a show.

Parliamentary committee to review political donation disclosure rulesSky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says there are 'big changes' being looked at by the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters. Mr Clennell said Special Minister of State Don Farrell is pushing for legislation to lower the threshold on which donations have to be disclosed from $15,200 to $1,000. “The committee will also examine real-time donation disclosures, not the current system where we can comb through who has donated what once a year to political parties,” Mr Clennell said. “Farrell is also keen to introduce spending caps for political parties, it seems, in a bid which will be sold as neutering the influence of the likes of Clive Palmer and Simon Holmes a Court, who of course, funded teal independents.”
