Guam, a US territory in the western Pacific Ocean, is fighting a deadly coronavirus second wave that is threatening to overwhelm the island's few hospitals.
By the time those restrictions began to ease in May, the territory had recorded about 170 cases — a number that was still high by Pacific standards, but tiny compared to what large countries had experienced.
That number's now sitting at 1,758, with 21 deaths. The youngest person to pass away was just 31 years old, and had underlying health conditions."Just last week we reported 32 nurses and healthcare workers were diagnosed with COVID-19, five doctors were diagnosed," Ms Carrera said.Restrictions have since come back into effect, including a stay-at-home order that's been in place since August 21.
Ms Carrera said the island had a good relationship with mainland authorities, and that its calls for assistance had been answered very quickly., which led to the infection of more than 1,000 crew members.Guam's strategic significance, given its location close to east Asia and its military assets, may also be part of the reason.
"So our community right now, we're on edge. This is not uncommon for any community facing these types of challenges."
