Carlton Football Club will become the fifth team in six years to make play finals after finishing 13th in the season prior if they can continue to take advantage of the AFL's weighted fixture system. via The Age Real Footy
If seventh-placed Carlton play finals, they will become the fifth team in six years to get an advantage from the AFL’s weighted fixture system and jump from 13th into the eight the following season.
The Blues’ four other double-up teams for 2022 are Fremantle , Richmond , Adelaide and Collingwood .While double-up matches against North Melbourne and West Coast will have a significant impact on win-loss records and teams’ percentages heading towards September, Carlton’s perceived fixture advantage comes from finishing at the top of the bottom-six bracket in 2021.
Last year Essendon won 11 games and finished eighth, a year after finishing 13th with 6.5 wins. Fremantle in 2020 is the only side of the past five years not to play finals after finishing 13th, although they did win one more game than the season prior and had to deal with playing in hubs during the COVID-affected season. While teams who finished 13th average three more wins the following season under the weighted fixture rule, teams who finish 12th are, on average, likely to go backwards.
