The Easter long weekend is quickly approaching and many Australians will be travelling, visiting family and friends, or making the most of the quiet break. Despite the spirit of the holiday, drivers are urged to remember that Easter is one of the most dangerous times on Australian roads.
Some states and territories will be handing out double demerits for offending drivers, with many more police out on patrol.States and territories will have police patrolling the roads across the Easter weekend. Double demerits will apply across NSW, the ACT and Western Australian from Thursday, April 17 until Easter Monday, April 21.Fines remain the same and are not doubled. The double demerit points will apply to offences like speeding, illegal phone use, incorrect use or no seatbelt and riding without a motorcycle helmet.Drivers are urged to put their phone away, slow down, avoid unsafe overtaking, be patient, rest when tired and allow for extra travel time.Australians are urged to remember that Easter is one of the most dangerous times on Australian roads. Unlike other states and territories, double demerit points work a bit differently as they do not exclusively apply during the holiday periods. Double demerit points are applied to people after certain second or subsequent offences committed within one year of a previous offence. These offences include illegal phone use, seatbelt offences, motorcycle helmet offences and speeding more than 20km/h above the limit.If you've had a clear record for more than 12 months, demerits are issued as normal. Double demerits will be active in NSW, ACT and WA across the Easter long weekend. Victoria does not impose double demerit periods, however extra police offices will be patrolling the roads over the Easter long weekend. Victoria Police will be launching a major eleven-day road safety operation from Thursday, April 17 until Sunday, April 27. Police will be targeting high-risk driving involving fatigue, impaired driving, seat belt non-compliance and excessive speed.South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania do not impose double demerit periods.
