Jennifer Lawson's forebears kept everything. Going through the inherited family archives recently she came upon an interesting document dated May 21, 1919. This was when Spanish influenza was rampant.Walter Tippett of Lismore on the right.

Mrs Lawson, retired, who lives in Ballina said the document related to her grandfather who had a men's outfitters business in Lismore."He was a businessman born in Casino so the journey may have been to visit family or to go there for business, we don't know. There's nothing to indicate why he would have been travelling there."That's a very severe restriction, it is only about 30 kilometres from Lismore to Casino.

Cuttings from local newspapers amongst the archives indicate the measures being taken to control the outbreak. One dated February 18, 1919, states that there were 20 fresh cases of pneumonic influenza bringing the total in NSW to 188. The same paper reported upset at the action of some Supreme Court judges who sat at the Banco Court without masks. The attorney-general argued they were exempt.
