It’s time to retire lingerie’s status as a Valentine’s Day gift from men to women. For queer relationships, it’s another story.
Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to demonstrate love with the perfect gift but crack its polished pink facade like a crème brûlée and you reveal a minefield, with featherweight bras and underpants the most explosive items.
The year-round desire for sexy lingerie has motivated Simone Perele’s launch in five Myer stores this month, with five to follow in August. Memphis Murphy, Aylah Williams, and Jane Noury in Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 3. The brand has helped promote diversity, benefitting other underwear labels.Associate professor of gender and sexuality Dr Lauren Rosewarne, from the University of Melbourne, supports sexiness in the underwear drawer but says it’s time to retire its status as a gift from men to women.
Just as questionable for Rosewarne is women buying underwear for men on February 14, with the sexualisation of men in underwear a relative recent phenomenon in popular culture and social media. “Last year we introduced a bed set with sheer fabric on undies and tops – please don’t call it men’s lingerie,” Nicolas said. “It’s a great gift that lets men feel sexy as well.”
