My resolution? Stop whinging. About COVID, about traffic on Punt Road, the weather, the price of petrol. In future, remnant whinging will be dedicated to making me feel better, despite acknowledging it produces no change, writes Jon Faine | OPINION
Why wait for New Year’s Eve to make resolutions? If their purpose is to scrutinise personal shortcomings, to make solemn promises of change, why defer the cleansing of the soul?My commitment to recycling is as profound as any, but I will no longer repeat annual promises. New resolutions, purpose-designed, tailored to these weird times.
I will not just whinge but also despair about the inanity and nastiness of social media trolls and “influencers”. I will grind my teeth over the absurd proliferation of new labels of pinot noir, appearing at a rate no human can follow. I have developed a deep loathing of anything to do with sourdough, especially that new coterie of bores who endlessly talk about it.Number Two? Be more generous. I will give loose change to buskers and donate more freely to charities that don’t waste money. I will not donate to any charity that cold calls at dinner time. Ever. I will remind myself of my good fortune, and that many, for no fault of their own, missed out on the opportunities my parents created for me.
Shouting at the TV or radio news will stop. Today. I will no longer annotate the news bulletins or provide my perceptive commentary for the benefit of whomsoever happens to be in the car or room. My insights, surely as perceptive as anything that Laurie Oakes ever offered, will remain cloistered within the confines of my temples. Although ABC TV’sI will go to the Melbourne Zoo more often.
