Next year it will negotiate a fresh collective agreement with the Australian Cricketers Association, in which centrally contracted players are expected to be formally required to play in the BBL for the first time since the competition’s 2011 inception.

But is the transition from summer’s former model to the future, after plenty of urgent conversations ushered by COVID-19, relevant ground to try to terminate an agreement that Seven has already stretched, tested and trialled with multiple previous complaints? That’s the way cricket boards and broadcasters commonly tend to operate, a world away from the pistols at 10 paces preferred by Seven over the past two years. The first attempt to win a discount, while making a lot of noise, ended in a misfire.In February 2021, an independent arbitrator demanded by Seven made the assessment that the network was entitled to only a minuscule discount in its broadcast rights fee to Cricket Australia, as a result of a small number of games cancelled due to COVID-19.
