Despite launching the biggest door knocking campaign in any state or territory, the Greens are expected to lose their inner-city seat of South Brisbane and went backwards in its other nearby seat of Maiwar.
Federal Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather says his party needs to have a "long honest look" at its politics and strategy after its abysmal result in the Queensland election.
"Part of it is that obviously Labor adopted a lot of the policies we were campaigning on, including 50 cent fares," he said."We're going to have to have a long honest look at our politics and strategy and make sure we're doing everything right. But the party has faced criticism that its state-level decline has been caused by the stance of federal MPs — particularly Mr Chandler-Mather — on issues such as housing, the conflict in the Middle East andMr Chandler-Mather said he was "open to feedback and reflection" when asked if he took responsibility for his role in the result.
"The Greens vote spreads out in a greater geography but where they have historically been very dominant, they've gone down. While Mr Berkman retained the seat of Maiwar, Labor's Susan Irvine recorded a swing of 7.4 per cent, suggesting the Miles government's cost of living measures resonated with inner-city voters.John Mickel, QUT adjunct associate professor and former Queensland Labor speaker, said the party has created a gap in its support base by moving away from traditional environmental policies.
