Southern California faces a critical fire risk as multiple blazes ignite and spread rapidly, fueled by strong winds. The Hughes Fire near Castaic Lake has burned over 41 square kilometers, while other fires threaten communities in La Jolla, near the US-Mexico border, and Ventura County.

Southern California is grappling with a critical fire risk under a red flag warning , as strong winds fanned the flames of multiple blazes. The Hughes Fire , which erupted Wednesday morning near Castaic Lake, scorched nearly 41 square kilometers of trees and brush in less than a day. Crews made significant progress by Thursday afternoon, containing over one-third of the fire.

Meanwhile, a brush fire erupted in the affluent La Jolla neighborhood near the University of California, San Diego, prompting evacuations that were later lifted. Further south, near the US-Mexico border, the Otay Mountain Wilderness was engulfed by another rapidly spreading fire, threatening endangered species like the Quino checkerspot butterfly. Ventura County also saw a new fire near California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, leading to a brief evacuation. Water-dropping helicopters quickly contained the Laguna Fire, allowing for the evacuation order to be downgraded to a warning. The presence of winds, though not as strong as those that fueled the initial Palisades and Eaton fires, posed a challenge. Firefighting aircraft, however, were able to effectively deploy tens of thousands of gallons of fire retardant, aiding in the containment efforts. In the Castaic area, helicopters dropped water on the Hughes Fire, preventing its further expansion.Despite the progress made, nearly 54,000 residents in Castaic remained under evacuation warnings. Kayla Amara, a nurse from nearby Valencia, described the heightened stress levels as the Hughes Fire threatened her community. The Palisades Fire was over three-quarters contained, while the Eaton Fire was 95% under control. These devastating fires, which began on January 7, have claimed at least 28 lives and destroyed more than 14,000 structures.Officials welcomed the recent rain, but crews continued to reinforce hillsides and install barriers to mitigate the risk of debris flows as residents returned to the scorched Pacific Palisades and Altadena areas. The overall damage caused by the California fires is estimated to be at least $US28 billion in insured losses, with potentially more uninsured damage. This significant financial impact has prompted political discussions, with California Republicans opposing any conditions attached to federal disaster aid. The state Legislature approved a $US2.5 billion fire relief package to assist in the recovery efforts, particularly in the Los Angeles area. President Trump plans to visit California on Friday to assess the damage firsthand, though it's unclear if he will meet with Governor Newsom during his visit
