Hundreds of trucks pass through Rutherglen every day and locals are losing hope that they will ever see a bypass built. Regardless, they say action needs to be taken as a matter of urgency.

Two serious incidents, including a pedestrian fatality, in Rutherglen have left locals pleading for help.A community group wants immediate interim safety measures to be put in place to slow traffic and deter trucks.

For decades, locals have been calling for a heavy vehicle bypass to improve safety in the town and last month, their worst fears were realised. The incident occurred just after 9am on Thursday, March 28, when a 77-year-old Rutherglen woman was struck by a Ford SUV near the intersection of Main Street and Warrens Lane.Like Rutherglen, the South Gippsland town of Loch once had a busy highway running through its main street, but the realignment of the South Gippsland Highway in 2003 saw it bypassed.

"I had some trepidation about relocating to this particular town, but I fell in love with the shop," he said. "The bypass has encouraged people to come here, and we're regarded as the first port of call from Melbourne now, because we are under an hour and a half from the city," Mr Hastie said. Now, the Indigo Community Voice, the group of which Mr Ellerbock and Ms Gillman are members, wants those funds used for immediate safety improvements.
