NRL: The Brisbane Broncos are playing for pride when they round out their below-par season against the minor premiers the Melbourne Storm.
Does Kevin Walters want to prove himself as a successful NRL coach, or be remembered as a great bloke who was brought down by people stabbing him in the back?
It came after we questioned why the powers in charge at the Broncos hadn’t publicly backed Walters after Gorden Tallis called out Adam Reynolds to show his public support. My fear for Walters’ is what happened against the Dolphins last round smacked of a group of players who were no longer putting in for their coach.
It must have been an absolute embarrassment for the governing body to see Dolphins enforcer Felise Kaufusi escape suspension at the judiciary for his hit on Adam Reynolds. In the countdown to the finals no one seriously knows anymore what constitutes a penalty, a sin bin or a send off. I wrote back in 2020 that NRL chairman Peter V’landys needed someone like Wayne Bennett or Phil Gould to come in after Todd Greenberg departed as the game’s head of football. The reason for mentioning this now is that it shouldn’t just be the game’s officials under scrutiny at the much-anticipated end of season summit that Wayne Bennett has been calling for to overhaul the rules of the game.
Bennett is obviously still coaching and takes up a new challenge with the Rabbitohs next year, while Gus has his general manager of football job at the Bulldogs so it would be unlikely they could get him interested. Ikin of course has had some run-ins with the NRL in recent times as a direct result of his position with Queensland Rugby League, but he is an ethical man with really sound judgment and he would do an incredible job.
What do you reckon Ponga’s immediate thoughts were when Felise Kaufusi successfully argued a downgrade at the judiciary on Tuesday night? It’s become a joke how good old-fashioned enforcers like Kaufusi are being rubbed out of the game.
It is madness that South Sydney has now backed Latrell Mitchell to make his rugby league return from injury in the upcoming Koori Knockout during NRL grand final week.
