Speaking to Stateline, independent candidates say they are hoping a wave of discontent with the major political parties will help them seize the balance of power in the local Legislative Assembly at October's territory election.

After nearly 23 years of Labor -led government, Tom Emerson believes Canberra is ready for change.for singing "no Whyalla wipe-out" in 2012

"We've been very effective in delivering the things we've promised, the two parties have managed to work together really functionally," he said.Independents argue they offer an alternative to the Labor-Greens status quoAlthough the ACT has a history of prominent local independents, there hasn't been one elected to the Legislative Assembly in more than two decades.

Independent Fiona Carrick got seven per cent of the vote in the electorate of Murrumbidgee at the 2020 ACT election. Additionally, the ACT's system makes it very difficult for an independent to win, unless they form a group and register as a party, which gives them their own column on the ballot papers.

"I do think it would be great to see more people in the Assembly being accessible and representing their communities," Senator Pocock told Stateline. "I think an interesting challenge for the independents is to articulate a vision of what they want for Canberra," he added.
