The weight of expectation on the new Labor government was obvious well before its senior members reached the gates of Government House, with climate activists holding out placards screaming of the fresh hope the new regime brought with it.

Regional Development Minister Kristy McBain’s royal blue velvet pantsuit raised it higher.Need You Tonight,It brought laughter and applause, but Albanese warned from the podium against any more accompanying soundtracks.
The longest applause and warmest reception were reserved for Indigenous Australians Minister and Wiradjuri woman Linda Burney, whose role will be central to Albanese’s agenda in holding a referendum on enshrining an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.Credit:Burney, who also received a hug from Governor-General David Hurley, wore a kangaroo skin designed by her friend, Wiradjuri woman Lynette Riley, who also sang at Burney’s swearing-in to Parliament following her election in 2016.
