Australian shares are likely to start the day higher as global markets, China's in particular, rally in spite of surging COVID-19 infections.

But how it performs may depend on the Reserve Bank's latest commentary about Australia's economic recovery this afternoon.On Wall Street, technology stocks boosted the Nasdaq by 2.2 per cent to 10,434 points, its new closing record.Shares in online retail giant Amazon surged by 5.8 per cent or $US166.74 overnight — to finish at $US3,057.04, its highest value ever.
Investors are betting the Chinese economy will boost global economic growth as it recovers from the pandemic, even as surging COVID-19 infections delay the reopening of states across the US.
