ANALYSIS: The trade minister might be out, but questions remain for the Premier, as does the stain of losing two to a messy and unedifying jobs-for-mates scandal.

It could be a case of too little too late for NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, whose government remains mired in a jobs-for-mates scandalJohn Barilaro’s appointment to a plum US trade role after creating the post – and five others – during a lacklustre and self-interested stint as trade minister and deputy premier was never going to wash with the public.

But Ayres did not heed the advice and nor did Perrottet, who was briefed on the appointment but did not take it to cabinet. But he is gone now. For Perrottet, the questions of judgment remain. So too does the stain of losing two months to a messy and unedifying scandal which stinks of politicians putting mates first and the state second.they felt “used” in the process and were forced to sign off on an appointment they did not necessarily agree with.

Both sides are just eight months out from an election where the Coalition will ask voters to hand a 12-year-old government another four years in power. Perrottet and his senior colleagues are keen to cast themselves as a new government led by a young, ambitious and energetic team. But they are close to being felled by the same old issue of integrity.
