Opinion Could a smaller, bolder Splendour be a better festival experience?

Who’d be crazy enough to run a music festival? It was a frequently uttered question backstage at this year’s Splendour in the Grass, as artists, crew members and managers grappled with the logistical issues that defined its return after three years.

It seems significant that extreme weather has bookended the pandemic’s impact on live music. With climate change making summers hotter and rainfalls heavier, there are serious questions about the long-term viability of Australia’s iconic outdoor festivals. But weather wasn’t the only logistical challenge. The mayor of Byron Shire, Michael Lyons, told thethat while the festival sits outside the shire’s regulatory authority, they had opposed the increase in attendee numbers from 35,000 to 50,000.

, but as Lyons points out – none of these were unexpected. Choosing the festival’s return year in a location that has been inundated with flooding and with well-known hospitality staff shortages across the country, to increase capacity by 15,000 was an odd decision. The other unfortunate byproduct of the logistical issues is that it distracted from why so many people copped the mud, the rain and the lines to get on site: the music. An event like Splendour is an opportunity for music fans to see some of the best acts from Australia and around the world, and for emerging acts to showcase their music to international label execs.
