Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, governments around the world have flocked to new technologies in the hope of better gathering information on the movements of potential spreaders, using everything from QR codes to camera drones in the sky in the purported effort to keep us safe.

The test project will initially involve up to 10,000 CCTV cameras to gather data across the city of Bucheon, despite obvious privacy concerns from opposing camps. “It sometimes takes hours to analyse a single CCTV footage. Using visual recognition technology will enable that analysis in an instant,” he said on Twitter.

“The government‘s plan to become a Big Brother on the pretext of Covid is a neo-totalitarian idea,” representative of the opposing People Power Party Park Dae-chul told media. Up to 10,000 CCTV cameras will be used to track and infected person’s movements, anyone they had close contact with, and whether they were wearing a mask.
