She said education was prone to "sudden infatuations with flavour-of-the-month fads", and the latest was to downplay the importance of end-of-school assessment of academic ability, such as the HSC and ATAR, because they put too much pressure on students.
The Program for International Student Assessment's analysis of education systems around the world showed teachers in the highest-performing countries spent more time observing other teachers, engaging with families or working with children outside the classroom. The AITSL report, released on Friday showed 17 per cent of students entered initial teacher courses based on a reported ATAR. But the proportion with an ATAR above 70 has grown by six per cent since 2015.
