‘Embodiment of the revival’: State eyes theatre to secure Kings Cross rebirth | AngusGthompson
The NSW government is eyeing the purchase of a mothballed heritage theatre in Kings Cross to secure the economic revival of the former red-light district as a major cultural destination.
Mr Andersons, whose hand is in many Sydney landmarks including the Opera House forecourt, Parliament House upgrades, and theatres including the Capitol, the Roslyn Packer in Walsh Bay and Parramatta Riverside, described the Minerva as a “piece of sculpture” in its present form. “Any such acquisition would be subject to approvals following consideration of a business case,” the spokesman said. The campaign, driven by local businesses and the Minerva Theatre Action Group, has gained momentum following the lifting of the lockout laws in Kings Cross - initially put in place due to alcohol-fuelled violence, as well as the economic shock of the pandemic and repeated lockdowns.
The developer said it had commissioned a report that found the venue couldn’t be returned to a 1000-seat theatre given the changing nature of building and safety standards, and it could house less than 700 seats., Mr Harwin said Central Element’s report contradicted results of the joint feasibility study commissioned by the City of Sydney and the NSW government, which found there was “sufficient space to be able to house 1000 patrons”.
“With proper planning, you can incorporate all of that, so it doesn’t have to be just something from 1938. You can have all the best that contemporary theatre has to offer,” Mr Andersons said.
