A thrilling end to the 2019 world surfing tour sees a new world champion, Brazil's Italo Ferreira, crowned and the Australian Olympic team finalised.
Brazil's dominance of men's professional surfing is set to continue, with Italo Ferreira besting compatriot Gabriel Medina to secure both the 2019 world title and the prestigious Pipeline Masters.Italo Ferreira dedicated his world title and Pipeline Masters victory to his late grandmother
Medina had already sent social media into a tizz with a questionable—but permissible—interference tactic against another Brazilian, Caio Ibelli, to advance to the final rounds."I can't imagine this, it's been my dream my whole life," Ferreira began, before devoting the dual wins to his late grandmother and uncle.
However, both share common traits that have helped escalate Brazil's dominance of the men's competitive circuit in recent times. Surf writer and editor of Beach Grit Derek Rielly says their performances at the hallowed ground of Pipeline prove their dominance is not a flash in the pan.
