Concerns over the “wider chilling effect” of the National Security Law and “growing restrictions on freedom of speech and freedom of assembly” were also condemned.
The five Eyes release was echoed by the Group of Seven and the European Union who voiced similar concerns over the outcome of the city’s Legislative Council elections on Monday. Hours earlier the US imposed sanctions on five Hong Kong based Chinese officials, adding to the list of other officials with the same title in the Liaison Office sanctioned earlier this year.The sanctions mean that American citizens and businesses are barred from dealing with the targeted person whose US-based assets are also usually frozen.
