The Greens are preparing to back Labor’s signature climate reforms and vote them into law, despite the Climate Change Bill setting an emissions reduction target below what the minor party campaigned for and leaving out measures to stop coal and gas exports.
It is set to reach the Senate by September and because the Coalition has vowed to vote against the draft laws, Labor will need all 12 votes from the Greens plus one crossbencher. The Greens are calling for greenhouse emissions to be cut by 75 per cent cut by 2030 but Labor has ruled out any changes to its target of 43 per cent. However, Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said on Monday he would seek to set a higher emissions reduction target for 2035 within the next three years.
When asked if he could seek reforms to ban coal and gas through other legislation Bandt agreed, saying “there are a variety of ways that this issue could be tackled”. He claimed Labor’s current position would be unpopular with voters. The bill presents a dilemma for the minor party as it revives memories of its role in blocking the Rudd government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.
Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen announced changes to the federal government’s proposed climate change legislation on Monday.Bowen on Tuesday said the agreement is “very clear ... all future targets must be better than previous targets”.
