A government employee is fighting for life in hospital after being stabbed while at work on Friday morning, with fellow co-workers being taken away from the crime scene in tears.

Police suspect the alleged attacker is a 32-year-old man who set upon the 55-year-old worker on the ground floor in the foyer of Rawson Place Haymarket building.

He was treated by police just before 9:30am before NSW Ambulance paramedics rushed him to St Vincent's Hospital where he is in a critical but stable condition. A police officer stuck a sign on the doors of the building advising customers it would be closed for the rest of Friday due to the incident.
