For corporate lawyer Leanne Walker, beer - and owning a brewery - has been the path to a good family life.
“We were both in corporate worlds. We’d had our first child and were about to have our second child, and we both just went ‘no, we can’t keep doing this’. And we didn’t want to. We wanted to be there for our children.
Brad says the business has gone through a growth phase in the past 18 months, and that he now does longer hours than when he was at Macquarie working on systems for the trading floor. But he’s not complaining, especially after Sunday Road won 14 medals at this year’s Australian Beer Industry Awards.Leanne says that being a mum to two boys, a brewery owner and a lawyer means life hasn’t slowed down. She now works part-time at the firm, but says she really hasn’t “scaled back anything”.
The pandemic was an especially busy time, but Leanne says being able to empathise with clients helped. Leanne says being a part-owner has helped her carve out a niche as an adviser to the independent brewing industry.“There are very few experts in this area, from a legal perspective. We found one of the hardest things was finding good experts to go to grow with,” she says.
