The Commonwealth Games athletes’ outfitter had a tough assignment: to make the outfits feel Australian, and to make them in Australia.

| As the Australian team emerged on to the arena for their turn parading past the cheering throng at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Birmingham on Thursday night , one Aussie onlooker might have felt a particular pang of pride.

Mr Faulder and his team at RM Williams had been round this track before, having outfitted the Commonwealth Games team in the Gold Coast in 2018. But there was only so far that experience could take them.“What made it really different is, we really wanted to focus on Australian-made this time,” Mr Faulder told“It has taken two years, and it has certainly taken a small army of Australian manufacturers, to get us there and to get it over the line.

“So that’s how we’ve gone through the elements – the chinos, the boots, all the way down to the socks and shirts and polos.”“In 2018 the brief actually specified to be bold and bright, to represent the Gold Coast. For this Games, the brief was to be more elevated: we’re on a world stage and we wanted to show up best in class,” he said.It is not always easy to apply the country’s green and gold to a sporting ensemble without straying into the bold and bright.

“We wanted to make sure that we have some complementary footwear. The Birmingham weather, we had been given a bit of a wide scope on what to expect – so we had to make sure that the uniform had a few different layers and variables,” Mr Faulder said.It was an aesthetic as well as practical choice: “For the opening, they like things to be a little bit more formal and well-presented; and then for the closing, they’re a bit more casual and a little bit more fun with it.
