Officials in the Jakarta provincial government are holding Christmas carols on the streets of the Indonesian capital for the first time to "spread joy" and convince residents it caters for people of all faiths.
"Our thinking is that Christmas should be celebrated not only inside churches," said Hendra Hidayat, Bureau chief of education and mental spiritual affairs at the provincial government. "In other countries there are people singing in the streets during the Christmas season. It is good that the joy is shared with many people in public," he said.Despite Indonesia's majority Muslim population, he said official celebrations have also been held this year for the Hindu festival of lights, Divali, in November, and for the Islamic New Year in August.The city is home to approximately 10 million people with 83.5 per cent Muslims, 12.4 per cent Christian, 3.
