Victorians are living under some of the toughest COVID-19 restrictions in the world but one politician thinks the government is “failing” in its lockdown strategy.

Queensland Senator Matt Canavan said the ongoing restrictions are going to cause “untold economic devastation” for Victoria.

Mr Canavan questioned Victoria’s contact tracing capabilities, pointing out that some of the conditions of getting out of lockdown are already being breach by NSW, which has considerably eased COVID-19 restrictions. “They didn’t do anything to put themselves in this position. It was failures of the government that led to this,” he told the program.“I’m concerned the whole of regional Victoria has been treated the same. If there is no case in Traralgon but some in Mildura, why does it have to have the same situation? Why can’t we have a local plan, not these state-wide blunt plans.

“Two reasons, it is much harder than any other state has tried. Secondly, a lot hinges on very good contact tracing.
