Herald Sun Political Editor Tom Minear says the rapidly rising cases of COVID-19 and the prospect of further lockdowns is taking a toll on the mental health of many Melbourne residents.
Victoria recorded 191 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, the single highest day of new cases recorded by the state since the pandemic began. There are now 772 active cases of COVID-19 in Victoria and 438 may be community transmission. The surge in cases occurred after the Victorian government revealed there had been failures within the state's quarantine system. Mr Minear told Sky News people are frustrated that a failure in the quarantine procedures has led to this outbreak.
"I think there is frustration about the hotel quarantine situation," he said. "Victoria lead that nationally, Daniel Andrews was someone who really pushed for that, and to see how its has failed, and Daniel Andrews admits that, the government admits that, I think that has definitely frustrated people. "Going back a couple of weeks, I got the sense people in Victoria didn't grasp the fact that this virus isn't dead, there was always the risk of another outbreak.

COVID-19 measures 'are always going to have a level of unfairness' | Sky News AustraliaNationals Senator Matt Canavan says the coronavirus cannot be extinguished so authorities should be concerned with making sure “we’re nimble enough to respond to issues as they arise”. \n\nThe border between NSW and Victoria is set to close from 11:59pm on Tuesday in a bid to prevent Melbourne’s surge in coronavirus cases spreading north, which is expected to cause problems for twin-city communities such as Albury-Wodonga. \n\nMr Canavan told Sky News while it was inconvenient for those impacted by the closures, he was in favour of border closures and travel restrictions in a targeted approach. \n\n“It would be worthwhile us looking at sharper rather than blunter measures in response to local outbreaks,” he said. \n\n“That means more targeted lockdowns, more targeted restrictions on travel where the actual outbreaks are occurring.\n\n“Some of these measures are always going to have a level of unfairness if you like, it’s unfair that people are locked up in towers, it’s unfair that some suburbs have had to be locked down, but if we can limit the unfairness to where the measures have to be targeted to, that will be better for more people and it will help our economy.” \n\nImage: AP
