More than 100 children were strip-searched by NSW Police during the COVID-19 pandemic - a time when festivals were cancelled and lockdowns kept people at home. 7NEWS

The data obtained by Redfern Legal Centre under access to information laws revealed the searches were among 4477 conducted by NSW Police between July 2020 and May 2022. Of those, 108 were children aged between 10 and 17.Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free onNothing illegal was found in almost 60 per cent of searches conducted during the period - but in the majority of cases where an item was found, it was an illegal drug.

The highest number of strip searches in Sydney occurred in Surry Hills , Sydney , Sydney Olympic Park , and Liverpool , while Dubbo accounted for the highest number in any regional suburb .Indigenous Australians made up about 10 per cent of those searched, despite making up just 3.4 per cent of the state’s population. Of the 108 children searched, 18 per cent were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
