The Bell Shakespeare Company was just hours away from lifting the curtain on its triumphant return to the stages of Western Australia.
The Sydney-based national theatre company is one of many arts organisations hit hard by a surge in workers calling in sick last month, as COVID-19 and other lingering illnesses continue to hamper the industry’s recovery. July’s national peak of 44 per cent was higher than the 32 per cent rise registered in June, and significantly higher than the same time last year, when the rate of employees taking sick, carer’s or personal leave peaked at 9 per cent above the pre-COVID baseline.Helen Lea from MYOB said a combination of COVID-19, cold and flu had contributed to higher rates of workplace absenteeism.
