As a one-year fishing ban on the eastern blue groper in NSW comes to an end, anglers and scientists urge the government to prioritize conservation efforts. While the ban aimed to protect the iconic fish, there's a lack of data to assess its effectiveness. The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is finalizing a stock assessment for later this year, but a decision on the ban's continuation is pending.
A ban on fishing the eastern blue groper has been in place since March last year.Anglers and scientists are calling on the state government to take conservation of the iconic eastern blue groper seriously as a one-year fishing ban trial comes to a close.
The response from the Minns government was swift. A complete ban on fishing the species, including by line fishermen, was put in place for at least 12 months. The eastern blue groper can be found off coastlines across the east of Australia and is illegal to fish in Victoria. The ban was met with confusion by anglers who had been fishing groper for more than 50 years and said the population was abundant.
He has watched the population lollipop but said he had never seen groper numbers in such abundance as right now. "We've been marginalised, we've been ostracised, we've been forced in to this situation by some really bad decisions," he said.
