The UK reported its highest daily infection since the beginning of the pandemic with health officials warning the highly transmissible Omicron variant is moving at an 'absolutely phenomenal pace'.

"I'm afraid we have to be realistic that records will be broken a lot over the next few weeks as the rates continue to go up," Prof Whitty said during a Downing Street press conference on Wednesday. "And the principle one being the speed at which this is moving, it is moving at an absolutely phenomenal pace."
Health Minister Sajid Javid said Omicron has overtaken Delta as the dominant variant in London, making up more than 60 per cent of COVID-19 cases.
