‘Opportunity to reset’: Inner West mayoralty bargaining begins | AngusGthompson
The horse-trading has begun for the Inner West mayoralty, with the Greens minority seeking to form alliances to hoist a first-time councillor into the role ahead of Labor’s Darcy Byrne.
“We see it as a good opportunity to reset the council culture,” Ms Shetty said, adding her team wanted to promote a collegial council environment in the new term.Cr Byrne, who was heavily campaigning in the lead-up to the December 4 local government elections to return as mayor, is likely to be re-elected if Labor claims eight of the 15 spots on council, however, as of Tuesday, the caucus was yet to decide on their mayoral nominee.
Cr Byrne’s previous term was pocked with controversies, including a finding this year by the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal that the former mayor held a conflict of interest in using a council vote to quash inflammatory comments about him and others on social media.
